Why Your Category Matters So Much

Google uses your primary category as one of its main signals for local ranking. It tells the algorithm what type of business you are, which searches you should appear for, and how to display your profile in results.

A plumbing company that selects "Contractor" instead of "Plumber" is essentially asking Google to rank it for a much broader, more competitive term — while also missing patients searching specifically for plumbing help. The wrong category dilutes your relevance exactly where it matters most.

Primary Category vs Secondary Categories

You can only have one primary category, and it carries the most ranking weight. Choose the most specific, accurate description of your main business activity.

Secondary categories let you add up to nine additional descriptors, but use restraint here. Adding too many categories signals to Google that you're not sure what you are — and Google isn't sure either. Stick to categories that describe genuine services you actively offer.

A dental practice might have "Dentist" as its primary category and add "Cosmetic Dentist" and "Pediatric Dentist" as secondary categories — but only if it genuinely offers cosmetic and pediatric services. Adding every dental subspecialty just to capture more search traffic backfires.

The Describe What You Are Rule

There's a common mistake businesses make when choosing categories: they describe what they do rather than what they are.

A hotel with a spa should categorize itself as "Hotel," not "Spa." The spa is a feature of the business, not the business itself. A restaurant that serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner shouldn't list "Breakfast Restaurant" as its primary category unless breakfast is genuinely the core of what it does.

This rule becomes more important the broader your services are. A general contractor might offer roofing, plumbing, and electrical work, but "General Contractor" is still the right primary category. Add specific trade categories as secondary if relevant.

How to Find and Change Your Category

Log into your Google Business Profile, go to Edit Profile, and look for the Business Category section. Start typing your business type and Google will suggest matching categories from its full list. Browse until you find the most specific option that accurately describes your primary service.

If you manage multiple locations, each location can have its own category — which is useful if different branches genuinely focus on different services.

A Note on Keeping Categories Current

Google updates its category list periodically, adding new options as industries evolve. It's worth reviewing your categories once or twice a year to see if something more accurate or specific has been added since you last checked.
